 «A FOX AND A HARE»

 

Once upon a time there was a hare. His name was Little Grey Hare and a fox named Red Fox. They lived side by side in the forest. When winter came the hare began to build a house of wood and the fox built the house of ice.

 

Act I

The hare is building a house. The fox is coming up to him.

Fox. Hi, hare!

       Hare. Hi, Red Fox!

Fox. What are you doing?

Hare. I am building a house of wood.

Fox. Ha, ha, ha. Your house is not beautiful. Look at my house of ice. It’s nice and as beautiful as a crystal palace.

Red Fox was happy all winter but when spring came, her house melted and she came to the Little Red Hare.

Act 2

The hare is sitting in his house looking at the window. The Red Fox is knocking at the door.

Hare. Who is there?

Fox. It’s me, Red Fox. Let me in. My house has melted.

Hare. Oh, no. My house is bad for you.

Fox. Oh, Little Grey Hare, excuse me please. You are so kind. Let me in. I shall live near the door and I shall help you about the house.

Hare. O.K. Come in.

 

Act 3

The fox is sitting by the window, a hare is sweeping near the house. The Hare wants to come in to the house but the door is locked.

Hare. Open the door, Red Fox, let me in.

Fox. Oh, no. I am tired of you and I don’t want to live with you. Go away!

Hare. Let me in. I am so tired and I want to sleep.

Fox. I’ll jump out of here and I’ll thrash and tear you into pieces.

 

Act 4

Little Grey Hare is sitting near the house and crying. The wolf goes by.

Wolf. Hello, Hare, why are you crying?

Hare. Oh, wolf. I had a house of wood and Red Fox had a house of ice. When spring came her house melted. She asked to live with me but sent me away. And I don’t know what to do.

Wolf. Don’t cry. I shall help you. Hey, Red Fox! Get out of the Little Grey Hare’s house.

Fox. I shall climb down, jump out of the house and I’ thrash and tear you into pieces.

Wolf. I am sorry, Hare. She is so angry. I can’t help you.

 

Little Grey Hare is sitting and crying. The goat goes by.

Goat. Hello, Little Grey Hare. Why are you cry­ing?

Hare. Oh, Goat. I had a house of wood but Red Fox had a house of ice. When spring came her house melted. She asked to live with me but sent me away and I don’t know what to do.

Goat. Don’t cry, I shall help you.

Hare. How can you do? The wolf tried but couldn’t

Goat. I shall try. Hey, Red Fox, come out of Lit­tle Grey Hare’s house.

Fox. I shall climb down, jump out of the house and I’ll thrash and tear you into pieces.

Goat. I’m sorry. She is so angry, I can’t help you.

 

Little Grey Hare is sitting and crying, the bear goes by.

Bear. Hello, Hare. Why are you crying?

Hare. Oh, Bear, I had a house of wood and the fox had a house of ice. When spring came her house melted. She asked to live with me but sent me away and I don’t know what to do.

Bear. Don’t cry Little Grey Hare, I shall help you.

Hare. How can you? The wolf tried but couldn’t, the goat tried but couldn’t.

Bear. I shall try. Hey, Red Fox! Come out of the Little Grey Hare’s house.

Fox. I shall climb down, jump out of the house and thrash and tear you into pieces.

Bear. I’m sorry, Hare. She is so angry, I can’t help you.

 

Little Grey Hare is sitting and crying, the Cock goes by.

Cock. Hello, Little Grey Hare! Why are you crying?

Hare. Oh, Cock. I had a house of wood, but the fox had a house of ice. When spring came her house house melted. She asked to live with me, but sent me away and I don’t know what to do.

Cock. Don’t cry, Little Grey Hare. I shall help you.

Hare. The wolf tried but couldn’t, the goat tried but couldn’t, the bear tried but couldn’t. How can you?

 

Cock, Never mind. (Comes to the house.)

Come, Red Fox, Don’t try to hide
        Golden Rooster waits outside
        Out, Red Fox, and fast away
        Leave the house without delay!

Fox. Wait, Golden Rooster with a Silken Beard,
Don’t be in a hurry.

Cock. Cock-a doodle-do, cock-a doodle-do! I am
coming strait at you.

Fox. Wait a minute, Golden Rooster, I shall put on my coat.

Cock

Out, Red Fox, and fast away
        Leave the house without delay
       With my saber sharp and new
       I will straightway fall on you.

 

The Fox ran away and Little Grey Hare and Golden Rooster lived together many years.
